China's smartphone sales up 141.5 pct y-o-y to 75.28 mln in Q1, Analysys

The sales of smartphones in China in the first quarter of 2013 increased by 141.5 percent year on year, or 32.2 percent from the previous quarter, to 75.28 million units, Analysys International, a leading information provider in China's Internet market, reported on Monday.

National carrier Air India (AI) has sought compensation from Boeing for Dreamliners not meeting the 20% fuel efficiency claims as the airline could achieve only a tad over 17% fuel economy from its six 787s, an AI source told PTI on Friday.

"We are confident that we will pass more than 10 million sales of the S4 next week. It is selling much faster than the previous model S3," Jong-kyun said.

India, May 18 -- Tata Motors, country's largest car maker is planning to postpone the development of its new assembly plant in Thailand worth Rs 1,839 crore, as it is facing slump in demand. It has decided to enter into Thailand's passenger car market during the third quarter of this year with the introduction of its Nano budget car. Automaker had unveiled plans to build a factory with an annual capacity of 60,000 vehicles, either in Thailand or Indonesia, at the end of 2012. The company has registered a fall of 14.85% in its total vehicle sales at 51,160 units in April 2013, as against 60,086 units sold in the same month last year. Pressurized by slowdown of automobile market in India, Tata Motors has sold just 948 units of its Nano- the People's car in April this year, down by 88% as compared to 8,028 units sold in April last year.

London, May 17 -- At least eight of the UK's leading fashion retailers have failed to put their names to a legally binding initiative to offer financial support for fire safety and building improvements in the wake of the Bangladesh garment disaster. George at Asda, Next, Matalan, River Island, Sports Direct, Peacocks, Shop Direct and the Arcadia group - which includes Topshop, Bhs and Dorothy Perkins - all failed to meet a deadline set by NGOs and labour leaders to sign the pledge.

Beginning 1 June 2013, Malaysia Airlines will be boosting its frequency between Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu from five times weekly to seven times weekly.The national airline operated its inaugural flight to Kathmandu from Kuala Lumpur on a thrice-weekly service schedule on 1st September 2012. We have such great demand from our passengers to fly between Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu. With the daily frequency, our customers will be able to travel conveniently and at ease. On top of that, the increased frequency will provide excellent connectivity between Malaysia and various other destinations on Malaysia Airlines and our oneworld routes, said Malaysia Airlines, Director of Commercial, Dr. Hugh Noel Dunleavy.The carrier will deploy a two-class configured Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 144 economy class seats and 16 business class seats. Flight MH170 leaves Kuala Lumpur at 8.55am to reach Kathmandu at 11.30am. The return flight MH171 leaves Kathmandu at 12.20pm to reach Kuala Lumpur at 7.15pmIn the meantime, Malaysia Airlines Economy, Business and First Class travelers will benefit from 30, 40 and 50 kilograms baggage allowance respectively. Passengers on Economy Class are moreover entitled to one piece of hand baggage weighing a maximum 7 kg, while those in Business Classes are enabled two pieces.

China Unicom boosts broadband speeds in Beijing

The Beijing subsidiary of China Unicom has launched a new broadband connection scheme that raises broadband speeds in the city, reports Tencent Tech. Users with a Unicom 512 kbps or 1 Mbps connection will have their connection speed raised to 4 Mbps. Users with a 2 Mbps broadband connection will be upgraded to 10 Mbps and customers with a 4 or 8 Mbps connection will be upgraded to 20 Mbps. Fibre-optic customers may be able to get speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The move is in part a response to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's goal of having 75 percent of Chinese broadband users on 4 Mbps or faster connections this year. China Unicom may roll out similar plans in other cities across China.
