Regional subsidiaries of Kenyan banks more than doubled their profits in the year ended December, underlining the importance of the units to the lenders' bottom lines.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), the biggest bank by assets in the East African region, posted a net profit of KES 3.03bn (EUR 27.5mn) for the first quarter of 2013, up 25% y/y, on the back of higher income coupled with a fall in loan loss charges. The bank's pre-tax profit grew 26% y/y to KES 4.26bn in Q1. Net interest income rose 5.8% y/y to KES 7.37bn, while non-interest income jumped 12.4% y/y to KES 4.02bn. The bank's loan loss provisions fell 28% y/y to KES 573.8mn, while gross non-performing loans grew 29% y/y to KES 16.13bn.
