Nature of Business Omnicane was launched in July 2009 through a strategic re-branding of Mon-Tr�sor-Mon-D�sert Limited (MTMD), a long established sugar cane group in Mauritius which origins can be traced back to the 1850s. Its agricultural activities are centered in the South of Mauritius although Omnicane owns lands in the Central part also.

MTMD was owned by various companies in time including Lonrho, Illovo Sugar Limited (1997-2001) and the holding BBHM as from 2002 to 2009. Omnicane was among the first entities to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. Its capitalization value at end November 2009 stood at some MUR 5361 millions (USD 178 millions). In 2008, Omnicane paid a dividend of MUR 2 for a nominal share value of MUR 7.50. Omnicane has a broad ownership with institutions as well as individuals, the latter amounting to 1737.

Omnicane is engaged in sugar cane production and processing, electricity production, food crop, flower and venison production.

Omnicane owns some 3,200 hectares of land under cane of which 2,879 were harvested in 2008 producing 248 091 tonnes of cane with an average yield of 86.2 tonnes per hectare. Sugar yield was 8.61 tonnes per hectare. Both performances represented a 3.4% increase over the previous year. Various sugar cane varieties are grown and practically all the field operations are totally mechanized, save harvest, which stands at 40% of the area at date, and there are plans to reach 75% in time.

The Mauritius Sugar Syndicate (MSS) and the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture hosted the annual conference of the Federation of SADC Sugar Producers (FSSP). It was held at Maritim Hotel, Balaclava from 3 to 5 August 2010. The theme of this conference was: Paving the way to a sustainable and coherent SADC sugar industry. On this occasion, Mr. Jacques M. dUnienville, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Omnicane delivered the keynote address entitled: Moving from sugar to sugar cane industry: the case of Omnicane.
