Nigerian telecoms regulator wants to curb MTN's dominance on mobile market
ABW - 15 May, 2013
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) wants to reduce the dominance of MTN on the mobile voice market and has ordered the company to reduce its rates for calls to rival operators to match the rates it charges for calls within its network. The NCC said its analysis had shown that the mobile voice market is not effectively competitive and is still highly concentrated with South Africa-based MTN having a 44% market share by subscriber number. The regulator added that there was a wide differential (of about 300%) between onaEURnet and offaEURnet calls, which was indicative of the "likely establishment of a calling club for MTN subscribers." Thus, the commission ordered that MTN's tariff for on-net and off-net should be the same, and subject to periodic review, effective from May 1.

ABW - 10 May, 2013
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has imposed NGN 53.8 million in fines on four GSM operators for contravening a directive that forbids the use of unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria. Each such pre-registered SIM attracts a penalty of NGN 200,000. MTN Nigeria received a NGN 29.2 million fine for 146 pre-registered SIM cards, Globacom is liable for a fine of NGN 11 million on 55 cards, Airtel Nigeria will pay NGN 8.6 million for 43 cards, and Etisalat Nigeria is subjedct to a NGN 5 million fine for 25 cards. The service providers have seven days to pay the fines, after which the amount increases by NGN 500,000 per day. The sanctions followed prior warnings by the commission in April 2012 that network providers will be liable for breaches by their dealers selling pre-registered cards.
